Also Known As Sequential Art
Print

Sequential art: stories told in drawn panels, from newspaper strips through comic books to graphic novels and manga. Comics grew up inside the newspaper wars of the 1890s, built their own publishing industry in the twentieth century, and now feed characters and stories to film, television and games.

Facts
Origin Year
1895 1
1895 marks the Yellow Kid in the New York World, the conventional start of the American newspaper strip; Rodolphe Topffer's drawn picture stories of the 1830s and older sequential picture narratives are counted by longer histories.
Origin
Richard Outcault's The Yellow Kid, which appeared in Joseph Pulitzer's New York World from 1895, is usually credited as one of the first newspaper comic strips, though the form developed gradually before it. 1
Place of Origin
New York City, United States 1
Primary Format
A sequence of cartoons arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humor or form a narrative. 1
Typical Distribution
Historically syndicated by a syndicate to many newspapers and published in newspapers and magazines; since the late twentieth century also collected in graphic novels and comic albums and published as webcomics. 1
