Pogo is an American comic strip created by Walt Kelly, first appearing in 1948 and nationally syndicated shortly after, set in the Okefenokee Swamp and built around an ensemble of anthropomorphic animal characters, most prominently the mild-mannered possum Pogo Possum, who speak in a distinctive whimsical Southern dialect. The strip became known for pointed political satire, most famously an extended sequence caricaturing Senator Joseph McCarthy as a menacing wildcat, at a time when direct political caricature in a widely syndicated strip was unusual. Pogo is widely regarded as a landmark of American comic-strip satire and one of the most linguistically inventive strips of its era.
