Film and Media Atlas

Open Questions

Things this atlas does not know. Each entry is a question that specialists have posed and not settled, recorded with what would actually resolve it and which expertise the answer needs.

These are kept deliberately, rather than quietly omitted. An atlas that shows only what it is sure of implies a confidence it has not earned, and the gaps are often where the interesting work is. Several sit exactly where two fields fail to meet: identifying the hyssop of the Hebrew Bible needs a botanist and a philologist of Biblical Hebrew, and neither one settles it alone.

Grouped by the part of the atlas the question sits in. Start here if you know the territory better than the technique.

Media Forms 7
Film Which work counts as the first film?

Open Film

Why It Is Open The answer depends on a definition no historian owns. Louis Le Prince shot moving photographic sequences at Leeds in 1888, Edison's laboratory showed Kinetoscope films to individual viewers from 1893, the Skladanowsky brothers projected to a paying Berlin audience in November 1895, and the Lumiere screening of 28 December 1895 is the industry's conventional birthday. Each candidate satisfies a different definition of film: recorded motion, exhibited motion, projected motion, or a paying public audience, and the field has not settled which definition governs.

What Would Settle It Nothing empirical; this is a definitional question. What would settle it is a discipline-wide convention on which criterion defines the medium, or the recovery of lost apparatus and footage, Le Prince's above all, that would strengthen one lineage's claim.

Expertise Needed Film History, Archival Research

Question posed in A History of Narrative Film, David A. Cook, Early cinema chapters; precursors and rival first claims.

Video Games Does violent screen media cause real-world aggression?

Open Video Games

Why It Is Open After more than six decades of research on screen violence and two decades focused on video games, the field remains genuinely divided. Laboratory studies find small short-term effects on aggressive thoughts and behavior, meta-analyses disagree over whether those effects are meaningful or artifacts of publication bias and weak measures, and long-term causal effects on real violence have not been demonstrated to the field's satisfaction; professional bodies have issued and then softened cautionary statements as the evidence has been re-examined.

What Would Settle It Preregistered longitudinal studies with behavioral rather than proxy outcomes, large enough to detect or bound small effects, and adversarial collaborations between the camps that agree on the measures before the data are collected.

Expertise Needed Psychology, Media Studies, Epidemiology

Question posed in Encyclopedia Britannica, Media effects and video game controversy coverage.

Video Games Which computer game is properly the first video game: OXO (1952), Tennis for Two (1958), Spacewar! (1962), or a later commercially released title such as the Magnavox Odyssey games (1972)?

Open Video Games

Why It Is Open Historians disagree because the answer turns on a contested definition rather than a missing fact. OXO ran on a specific vacuum-tube computer for a single university event; Tennis for Two used an oscilloscope display built for a lab open house; Spacewar! was the first game widely copied among research institutions on a raster-style display; and the Magnavox Odyssey (1972) was the first to reach ordinary homes commercially. Each is a genuine first by a different, defensible definition of what counts as a video game, and no consensus definition has settled which definition governs the title.

What Would Settle It A scholarly consensus definition of video game (display technology required, degree of interactivity, public versus laboratory intent) that the video game history field has not settled on.

Expertise Needed Video game history, computing history

Question posed in Wikipedia, History of video games, early history section.

Advertising Where was the 1786 advertising agency of William Taylor located?

Open Advertising

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia Advertising agency article names 1786 and William Taylor as the first acknowledged advertising agency but does not name a place, and Britannica advertising history returned an HTTP 403 blocked fetch when checked.

What Would Settle It A biographical or historical source naming the city or country where William Taylor operated in 1786, such as a specialist history of advertising or an archival record.

Question posed in Advertising agency (Wikipedia), Advertising agency, History section.

Blogging Where was Jorn Barger based in December 1997 when he coined the term weblog?

Open Blogging

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia Blog and Jorn Barger articles date the coining of weblog to December 17, 1997 but do not state where Barger was living or working at that time.

What Would Settle It A biographical source or interview placing Barger in a specific city in December 1997.

Question posed in Jorn Barger (Wikipedia), Jorn Barger, biography.

Outdoor Advertising Where did the 1867 earliest known billboard rentals take place?

Open Outdoor Advertising

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia Billboard article dates the earliest known billboard rentals to 1867 but names no city or country for that milestone.

What Would Settle It An advertising history source naming the place of the 1867 billboard rentals.

Question posed in Billboard (Wikipedia), Billboard, History section, 1867 entry.

Home Video Where was The Nostalgia Merchant, the first home video distribution company, based?

Open Home Video

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia Home video article names The Nostalgia Merchant as the first company to distribute feature films on home video in late 1976 into February 1977 but does not state where the company was based.

What Would Settle It A media industry history naming the city or state where The Nostalgia Merchant operated.

Question posed in Home video (Wikipedia), Home video, History section.

CinemaScope Which process truly began the 1950s widescreen era: Cinerama or CinemaScope?

Open CinemaScope

Why It Is Open Cinerama's three-projector This Is Cinerama opened in New York on 30 September 1952, a full year before Twentieth Century Fox brought CinemaScope to market with The Robe. Some historians therefore date the widescreen era to Cinerama's debut. Others credit CinemaScope, because its single-camera, single-projector design was the version ordinary theaters could actually install, and it is the one every other studio licensed within a year; Cinerama remained a novelty shown in a handful of specially built houses. Neither claim is wrong on its own terms; they answer different questions about what "began" an era means.

What Would Settle It Not an empirical question; a field-wide convention on whether priority means first public exhibition or first format to reshape the industry at scale would settle which claim the atlas itself should lead with.

Expertise Needed Film History

Question posed in Cinerama (Wikipedia), Cinerama, History section; CinemaScope, Origins section.

Vacuum Tube Who actually deserves credit for the vacuum tube's amplification mechanism: Lee de Forest or Edwin Armstrong?

Open Vacuum Tube

Why It Is Open De Forest patented the Audion triode in 1907 but, by most engineering historians' account, did not understand why it amplified a signal. Edwin Armstrong worked out the regenerative feedback mechanism that explained and dramatically improved that amplification around 1912-1913. De Forest then filed competing patent applications claiming he had found regeneration first, based on a 1912 notebook entry, and the priority fight over who actually understood the mechanism reached the US Supreme Court in 1934, which ruled for de Forest on narrow patent grounds even though most engineers and historians credit Armstrong's account of how and why the tube amplifies.

What Would Settle It The dispute is over documentary interpretation of surviving notebooks and patent filings rather than new data; a historian's definitive reassessment of the 1912 de Forest notebook entry against Armstrong's own dated laboratory notes would be the closest thing to resolution the field could produce.

Expertise Needed History of Technology, Electrical Engineering History

Question posed in Edwin Howard Armstrong - Wikipedia, Edwin Howard Armstrong, Regenerative circuit section.

Camera Obscura When was the camera obscura effect first described and used?

Open Camera Obscura

Why It Is Open The pinhole-image effect was independently recorded by more than one ancient culture centuries apart, so no single origin year or inventor can be attested; the earliest surviving written description, in the Chinese text Mozi, is itself dated only to the 4th century BCE by scholarly convention, not to an exact year, and Aristotle's roughly contemporaneous account in Problems raises the same difficulty.

What Would Settle It A dated primary text or archaeological find earlier than the Mozi passage (4th century BCE) or Aristotle's Problems, with scholarly consensus on its date, naming a specific first description rather than a range of centuries.

Expertise Needed history of optics and early media technology

Question posed in Wikipedia, Camera obscura (Wikipedia), 500 BC to 500 AD: Earliest written observations section.

Camera Obscura What single year should count as the camera obscura's introduction?

Open Camera Obscura

Why It Is Open The device is documented independently across roughly two thousand years with no single point of invention: described by Mozi in ancient China, known to Aristotle in ancient Greece, and only given its Latin name and popularized as camera obscura by Johannes Kepler in 1604.

What Would Settle It A history-of-optics or history-of-science source stating which of these moments the field itself treats as the device's dated introduction (first description, first named use, or first systematic optical treatment), rather than the atlas choosing one unilaterally.

Expertise Needed History of science (history of optics)

Question posed in Encyclopedia Britannica.

Kinetoscope Did Louis Le Prince publicly demonstrate his moving pictures before he disappeared in 1890?

Open Kinetoscope

Why It Is Open Le Prince shot Roundhay Garden Scene and Accordion Player in Leeds in October 1888, years before the Kinetoscope's 1894 commercial debut, but he disappeared without explanation in September 1890. No surviving contemporary record shows he ever exhibited his films to a paying or general audience the way Edison's parlors and the Lumiere brothers' screenings later did, so his priority claim over projected or publicly shown motion pictures cannot be confirmed from the surviving record.

What Would Settle It A contemporary advertisement, newspaper notice, or court record documenting an actual public screening of Le Prince's films before September 1890 would settle the question; the 1898 Edison v. American Mutoscope and Biograph litigation examined his camera and patent directly but did not surface such a record.

Expertise Needed Film History

Question posed in Louis Le Prince (Wikipedia), Louis Le Prince, lead section.

Milestones 4
The First Photograph When exactly did Nicéphore Niépce make the first surviving photograph?

Open The First Photograph

Why It Is Open Niepce's own correspondence with his brother Claude places his first successful permanent camera image sometime between 1822 and 1827, and the exposure length is itself disputed: an eight-to-nine-hour mid-20th-century estimate against a later finding of several days.

What Would Settle It A firmly dated Niepce document narrowing the range, or a forensic re-examination of the surviving plate itself.

Expertise Needed History of photography

Question posed in Wikipedia, Nicephore Niepce, Photography section.

KDKA Election Night Broadcast Was KDKA's 1920 election-night broadcast really the first, or do rival stations have an equal claim?

Open KDKA Election Night Broadcast

Why It Is Open At least three other stations made audio transmissions of election returns that same evening (the Detroit News's "Detroit News Radiophone" service, amateur station 8MK, plus a Saint Louis Post-Dispatch arrangement and a Buffalo Evening News broadcast), and earlier scheduled transmissions already existed, Lee de Forest's 2XG from late 1916 and Charles Herrold's San Jose station from 1912.

What Would Settle It An agreed scholarly definition of what counts as a qualifying broadcast: a regular published schedule versus a one-off transmission, and a licensed commercial station versus an amateur one.

Expertise Needed Broadcast history

Question posed in Wikipedia, KDKA (AM), competing election-night broadcasts.

First Transatlantic Radio Signal Was the signal Marconi reported receiving in December 1901 genuinely a transatlantic radio transmission?

Open First Transatlantic Radio Signal

Why It Is Open No automatic instrument record was made at Signal Hill; Marconi and his assistant listened for the expected repeated Morse letter S through a telephone receiver alone, and technical historians have since questioned the reception given uncertainty about the wavelength used and the difficulty of long-distance daytime propagation at the likely frequencies.

What Would Settle It An independent contemporary instrumented record, which does not exist and cannot now be produced; Marconi's more systematic 1902 shipboard tests supply indirect support but do not themselves confirm the 1901 reception.

Expertise Needed History of radio technology

Question posed in Wikipedia, Guglielmo Marconi, transatlantic reception evidential debate.

First Public Television Demonstration Should Baird's 1926 mechanical demonstration or Farnsworth's 1927 all-electronic demonstration be credited as the true invention of television?

Open First Public Television Demonstration

Why It Is Open Baird's January 1926 demonstration showed the first live moving television images before witnesses, but used a mechanical scanning system; Philo Farnsworth demonstrated the first all-electronic television the following year, and some historians credit Farnsworth's electronic approach, which underlies all later television technology, as the more consequential achievement despite Baird's earlier priority.

What Would Settle It Not resolvable by new evidence alone: it turns on whether priority in time or eventual technological lineage is the criterion for "true" invention, a definitional question historians continue to answer differently.

Question posed in Who Really Invented the Mechanical Television? (BBC Science Focus), sciencefocus.com, Who Really Invented the Mechanical Television?.

Landmark Works 2
The Birth of a Nation What was the actual box office gross of The Birth of a Nation?

Open The Birth of a Nation

Why It Is Open The film's 1915 to 1920s roadshow release predates reliable, centralized box office reporting, and the large early gross figures widely repeated in later popular accounts of the film cannot be traced to a verifiable contemporary source.

What Would Settle It A rigorous historical accounting study working from surviving distributor ledgers and regional exhibition records, of the kind film economic historians have not yet completed for this title, could establish a defensible figure or a documented range.

Expertise Needed Film economic history

Question posed in The Birth of a Nation (Wikipedia), The Birth of a Nation, Box office section.

Tank Man Who was Tank Man, the unidentified man who stood in front of the tank column near Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989, and what became of him?

Open Tank Man

Why It Is Open Wikipedia (Tank Man, lead section): "Tank Man is an unidentified individual, presumed to be a Chinese man, who stood in front of a column of Type 59 tanks on Chang'an Avenue near Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5, 1989." No name, fate, or identity for the man has ever been confirmed by any government or news organization, decades after the event.

What Would Settle It A credible, independently verified identification of the man (by name, with corroborating documentary or eyewitness evidence accepted by reliable secondary sources), or a confirmed account of his fate.

Expertise Needed journalism

Question posed in Tank Man (Wikipedia), lead section.

Hypodermic Needle Model Was the hypodermic needle model ever actually formulated as a coherent theory, or is it a retrospective myth?

Open Hypodermic Needle Model

Why It Is Open The model is often retrospectively credited to Harold Lasswell's 1927 propaganda studies, but historians of communication research have found that neither hypodermic needle nor magic bullet appears anywhere in his own writing, and describe the model as a possible strawman or myth manufactured by later textbooks rather than a theory any single scholar actually stated at a fixed date.

What Would Settle It A definitive history-of-the-field study tracing the term's actual first coherent statement and its true originator, rather than the retrospective attribution to Lasswell that current textbooks repeat.

Expertise Needed History of communication research

Question posed in Wikipedia, Hypodermic needle model, Concept section.
