Prince Valiant is an American comic strip created by Hal Foster, beginning in 1937 and following the adventures of a Nordic prince in and around the court of King Arthur, told through elaborately researched settings, costume and armor rather than the fantastical anachronism common to earlier adventure strips. Foster drew the strip without word balloons, instead running narrative captions beneath painterly, densely detailed full page panels, a format that gave the strip an unusually illustrative, storybook quality for its medium. It is widely regarded by comics historians as one of the most visually accomplished adventure strips in American newspaper comics and has continued publication under later artists after Foster's own tenure.
