The Sandman (comic book)

The Sandman is a comic book series created and written by Neil Gaiman, published by DC Comics from January 1989 to March 1996 across seventy five issues, mostly under the Vertigo imprint the series helped establish. It follows Dream, one of seven immortal siblings called the Endless who personify fundamental aspects of existence, across stories that draw on mythology, history and literature. The series was among the first graphic novel collections to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list, alongside Watchmen, Maus and The Dark Knight Returns, and Norman Mailer's description of it as a comic strip for intellectuals reflects the way it drew readers from well outside the traditional comics audience and helped establish mature, literary fantasy as a viable direction for the medium.
