The Dark Knight Returns is a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries written and drawn by Frank Miller, depicting an aging Bruce Wayne emerging from retirement to resume his role as Batman in a violent, near-future Gotham City. Published in an oversized, prestige comic book format aimed at an older readership, the series presented a grimmer, more psychologically complicated take on the character than prior decades of Batman comics had allowed.
