The Beano

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

The Beano is a British children's comic first published by the Dundee company D.C. Thomson in July 1938, built around a rotating cast of mischievous child and animal characters presented in short comic strips rather than a single ongoing story. Its longest running characters include Dennis the Menace, introduced in 1951, and Minnie the Minx, introduced in 1953, both of whom remain closely associated with the title's identity. Still published weekly, it is recognized as the longest continuously running British children's comic in print, and its history is closely tied to that of its longtime sister publication The Dandy.
