Chester Gould (November 20, 1900 to May 11, 1985) was an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip, which he wrote and drew from 1931 to 1977, incorporating numerous colorful and monstrous villains. His run of more than four decades made the strip one of the long-lived newspaper features of its century. The atlas records him as the creator of the Dick Tracy franchise, so that the franchise can be traced to the cartoonist who conceived and sustained it.
