The Spirit is an American comic strip created by Will Eisner, distributed as a self contained newspaper insert beginning in 1940 and following masked crime fighter Denny Colt as he battles criminals in the fictional Central City. Eisner used the strip's seven page weekly format to experiment with cinematic panel layouts, dramatic lighting and lettering integrated into the artwork itself, techniques that influenced later generations of comic book and graphic novel artists. Though the character himself was a fairly conventional pulp hero, the strip's visual storytelling is widely cited by comics historians as a foundational influence on the medium's artistic development.
