An American comic book writer who, with artist Joe Shuster, created Superman, first published in Action Comics #1 in 1938 for National Allied Publications (the corporate predecessor of DC Comics). Siegel and Shuster began developing the character in 1933 and sold the rights in March 1938 for 130 dollars, a sale they came to regret once Superman became enormously successful; Siegel later co-created Doctor Occult (with Shuster) and The Spectre (with Bernard Baily), and created ten early members of the Legion of Super-Heroes during a second tenure at DC from 1959 to 1966.
