Maus is a graphic novel by Art Spiegelman, serialized from 1980 to 1991, recounting his father Vladek's experience as a Polish Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. It depicts Jews as mice, Germans as cats and Poles as pigs, and moves between two timelines, a framing story of Spiegelman interviewing his father in New York in 1978 and 1979 and a historical narrative following the family from the years before World War II through their eventual liberation from Nazi concentration camps. In 1992 Maus became the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize, receiving a Special Award in Letters, a milestone widely credited with establishing that comics could carry the same weight of literary and artistic achievement as prose, and it remains one of the most widely taught works of Holocaust literature.
