The first commercially available home video game console, developed by Ralph Baer and his team at Sanders Associates as the 'Brown Box' prototype (1966 to 1972), licensed to Magnavox and released in North America in September 1972 (the United Kingdom followed in 1973 and continental Europe in 1974). Before 1972, electronic games existed mainly inside large academic and research institutions; the Odyssey brought interactive gaming into ordinary homes, launching the console industry.
