Hong Kong Phooey

Television-Originated Franchises

Hong Kong Phooey is an American animated television series made by Hanna-Barbera Productions and shown on ABC as a thirty minute Saturday morning programme. It ran for a single run from 7 September 1974 to 21 December 1974. The series is a comic parody of the kung fu television programmes and films that were popular at the time. Its hero is the clumsy and ineffective masked fighter Hong Kong Phooey, whose secret identity is Penrod "Penry" Pooch, a mild-mannered janitor at a police station who works under the watchful eye of Sergeant Flint, known as Sarge. The franchise is placed here because its fictional universe first appeared on television.
