An internal department at a television network or studio that reviews programs for moral, ethical and legal concerns, balancing the interests of broadcasters, creators, audiences and regulators. In the United States the modern oversight system took shape after the 1950s quiz show scandals, when networks built detailed regulatory frameworks for game shows and programming generally, and such departments continue to police fairness on televised game shows as an adjunct to the production company's own judges.
