The date the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America began strictly enforcing the Motion Picture Production Code, the self-censorship rules adopted in 1930 but left toothless until the Production Code Administration could refuse its seal to any film distributed without it. From 1 July 1934 no major American studio could release a film in the United States without that seal, and it remained the industry's governing standard until the ratings system replaced it in 1968.
