The delivery of content to a narrow, specialized audience rather than to the general public, the deliberate opposite of broadcasting. Computer scientist J. C. R. Licklider popularized the term in 1967 to describe television networks built around the interests of small audiences, and it now covers everything from targeted cable channels to individual podcasts.
