Wings of Desire is a 1987 West German film directed by Wim Wenders, following unseen angels, including Damiel, played by Bruno Ganz, who wander divided Cold War Berlin listening to the private thoughts of its inhabitants, until Damiel falls in love with a trapeze artist and longs to become mortal. The film shoots the angels' perspective in black and white and shifts to color for scenes experienced from a human viewpoint, a device used to mark the difference between eternal observation and lived human experience. Wings of Desire is widely regarded as one of Wenders' finest films and a landmark of late twentieth century European art cinema, and it was later remade in the United States as City of Angels.
