NYPD Blue is an American police procedural created by Steven Bochco and David Milch that aired on ABC from 1993 to 2005, following detectives of a fictional Manhattan precinct through an ensemble format that mixed case investigations with the detectives' personal struggles. The show pushed the boundaries of broadcast television content, featuring more nudity and coarser language than was then common on network drama, which led at least thirty ABC affiliate stations to refuse to air its debut episode. Despite that resistance it was met with strong critical acclaim for its gritty realism and became ABC's longest running prime time drama until Grey's Anatomy surpassed it in 2016.
