A general-interest American magazine relaunched by Henry Luce in 1936 as a photo-centric news publication, after Luce purchased the name from an existing humor magazine. Luce's own prospectus described its mission as 'to see life, to see the world, to eyewitness great events,' and the magazine dedicated roughly fifty pages an issue to photographs with condensed captions, at its peak reaching a circulation equal to about a quarter of the United States population; its place in the history of photojournalism is considered one of publishing's most important contributions to the field.
