An American publisher who, with Briton Hadden, launched Time in 1923 as the first weekly news magazine in the United States, then founded Fortune (1930), Life (1936) and, later in his life, Sports Illustrated (1954). Luce closely supervised a stable of magazines that reshaped American journalism and reading habits, and by combining a magazine empire with radio and newsreel ventures built what has been called the first multimedia corporation.
