Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room is a 2005 American documentary directed by Alex Gibney and based on the 2003 book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, who are credited as co-writers of the film. It traces the 2001 collapse of the Enron Corporation, drawing on archival footage and interviews with McLean, Elkind, former Enron executives and employees, stock analysts and former California governor Gray Davis to reconstruct the fraud that led to criminal trials for several of the company's top executives. A section of the film also covers the involvement of Enron's energy traders in manipulating the 2000-01 California electricity crisis, tying the company's internal culture directly to a crisis felt by ordinary electricity consumers.
