Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Films built around the presentation of real events, places and people rather than invented narrative, from the earliest feature documentaries through wartime and political nonfiction film, following the National Film Registry and MoMA convention of grouping documentary landmarks by form across eras and countries rather than folding them into a narrative period. Belongs here: landmark documentary and nonfiction films of any era or origin, including propaganda films studied as documentary form. Does not belong here: narrative fiction features, however historically based, grouped under Hollywood and English-language studio cinema or world and international narrative cinema.
