A broadcast standard that displays pages of text and simple graphics on a television screen by hiding the data inside the invisible vertical blanking interval of an ordinary broadcast signal, letting a viewer call up numbered pages of news, weather or listings with a remote control, though the system could only send, never receive, information. The BBC's Ceefax service, the first teletext service, launched in the United Kingdom on 23 September 1974, and the rival ITV service, Oracle, followed in 1975.
