Tomb Raider is a British video game franchise created by Toby Gard for Core Design, beginning with Tomb Raider in 1996, which introduced the archaeologist adventurer Lara Croft as one of the first prominent female protagonists in a major action video game franchise, exploring ancient tombs and ruins to recover legendary artifacts while solving environmental puzzles and fighting off wildlife, traps and rival treasure hunters. Lara Croft's design and the franchise's early commercial success made her one of the most recognized video game characters of the 1990s, and after development moved to Crystal Dynamics in the mid 2000s, the series was rebooted in 2013 with a grittier, more grounded origin story for the character that was followed by two further installments completing a trilogy. The franchise has been adapted into two Hollywood feature films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and a further film starring Alicia Vikander in 2018, along with an animated series, comic books and novels, and it has sold more than 95 million units across its games since 1996.
