Tomb Raider is a 1996 action adventure video game developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive, originally released for the Sega Saturn, MS-DOS and PlayStation, in which players guide the British archaeologist Lara Croft through ancient ruins and tombs, solving environmental puzzles and fighting hostile creatures and rivals while searching for lost artifacts. Its fully three dimensional environments and camera, then a novel combination for an action adventure game, allowed for exploration and platforming that earlier, more restricted game engines could not support. The game sold roughly seven million copies on PlayStation alone, established Lara Croft as one of gaming's most recognizable characters, and is widely credited as a template for the three dimensional action adventure games that followed it.
