Disney Princess

Film-Originated Franchises

Disney Princess, also called the Princess Line, is a media franchise and toy line owned by the Walt Disney Company. It was created by Andy Mooney, the head of Disney Consumer Products, who began work on it in January 2000 and saw the first line-up formalized that year. Rather than covering every princess in Disney media, it gathers selected female protagonists of the studio's theatrical animated films, a group that has grown to thirteen with the later additions of Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana and Raya. The word princess is used as a title for heroines who show inspiring qualities and does not always mean royal rank. The line has produced dolls, sing-along videos, apparel, beauty products, home decor and toys through licensees such as Mattel, Hasbro, Lego and Fisher-Price, and it is counted among the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
