HBO launched on 8 November 1972 as the first cable-originated television service in the United States, first reaching subscribers of a cable system in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It pioneered the modern pay-television model, offering unedited theatrical films and live sporting events with no commercial interruption, paid for by a flat monthly subscription rather than advertising.
