William A. Wellman

William Augustus Wellman (1896 to 1975) was an American film director whose career spanned the silent era into the studio system's golden age, known for crime, adventure, and action films that often centered on aviation. He directed Wings (1927), which became the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the inaugural Academy Awards ceremony in 1929. Over a career of more than 80 films, Wellman received four Academy Award nominations and won once, for Best Original Story on A Star Is Born (1937). Before entering filmmaking, Wellman flew as a decorated World War I pilot with the Lafayette Flying Corps, earning the Croix de Guerre with two palms, and his combat aviation experience directly shaped the flying and combat sequences that became a signature of his films.
