Wings is a 1927 American silent war film directed by William A. Wellman, following two rival fighter pilots who become friends while serving in the United States Army Air Service during the First World War. The production was noted for its extensive real aerial combat sequences, filmed with cameras mounted directly on the aircraft rather than through miniatures or process shots, an unusually dangerous and costly approach for the period. Wings won the award for Outstanding Picture at the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, making it the first film to receive what is now known as the Academy Award for Best Picture.
