Vsevolod Illarionovich Pudovkin was a Soviet film director, screenwriter and actor who lived from 28 February 1893 to 30 June 1953 and developed influential theories of montage. His masterpieces are often contrasted with those of his contemporary Sergei Eisenstein: Eisenstein used montage to glorify the power of the masses, while Pudovkin preferred to concentrate on the courage and resilience of individuals. He was granted the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1948 and directed Storm Over Asia.
