Storm Over Asia

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Storm Over Asia is a 1928 Soviet film directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin, following a Mongolian herdsman and trapper who is cheated by a European fur trader and later joins Soviet partisans fighting occupying British forces, only to be captured and, once an amulet suggests he descends from Genghis Khan, installed by his captors as a puppet leader he ultimately rebels against. The film is the third installment of what scholars call Pudovkin's revolutionary trilogy, following Mother and The End of St. Petersburg, and was later ranked by the Russian Guild of Film Critics among the hundred greatest films in Russian cinema history. It exemplifies Soviet silent cinema's use of fictional, personal narrative to carry an explicitly anti-imperialist and pro-Soviet political argument.
