Louis Jean Lumière was a French engineer and industrialist who lived from 5 October 1864 to 6 June 1948 and played a key role in the development of photography and cinema. With his brother Auguste he invented the cinematograph, a camera and projection device, and the brothers made some of the earliest films shown to public audiences, including Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory. He is credited as a director of that early film.
