The Lumiere brothers' program of short films projected for a paying audience in the Salon Indien of the Grand Cafe, Paris, on 28 December 1895, the conventional birthday of cinema. Other inventors projected films the same year, the Skladanowsky brothers in Berlin among them, but the Lumiere show is the one the industry descends from.
