Scottish engineer who gave the first public demonstration of working television, showing moving grayscale images to members of the Royal Institution in his Soho laboratory on 26 January 1926. His mechanical system lost the BBC's 1936 to 1937 trial to the all-electronic Marconi-EMI system, but the demonstration itself made television real.
