Japanese animator and director (1935 to 2018), co-founder of Studio Ghibli alongside Hayao Miyazaki. His 1988 film Grave of the Fireflies, depicting two siblings' struggle to survive in World War Two era Japan, is widely regarded as one of the most powerful anti-war animated films ever made.
