Hajime Yatate

Directors and Filmmakers

Hajime Yatate is a pseudonym used for the collective contributions of the Sunrise animation staff rather than the name of a single person. The name is credited as the original creator, gensaku in Japanese, of most original Sunrise works, among them the anime series Ronin Warriors. It is considered to be taken from a passage of Matsuo Basho's travel diary Oku no Hosomichi, in which the poet speaks of the first use of his travel writing implements, yatate no hajime. Crediting one shared name places a studio's collective authorship under a single byline, in the manner of other collective pseudonyms used in Japanese media, such as Saburo Yatsude and Izumi Todo under the Toei group.
