Garrett Brown

Garrett Wood Brown, born 6 April 1942, is an American inventor best known as the creator of the Steadicam, a stabilising camera mount that lets an operator film while walking without the shake of an ordinary handheld shot. The system was first used on Hal Ashby's Bound for Glory (1976), which won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and it went on to shape the running and training sequences of Rocky, the speeder-bike chase in Return of the Jedi and the corridors of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Brown's Steadicam work appears in more than seventy films. He also devised the DiveCam, the MobyCam and the SkyCam for sports coverage, and received an Academy Award for Scientific or Technical Achievement and an Emmy Award for the Steadicam.
