Fred Zinnemann (born Alfred Zinnemann, 1907 to 1997) was an Austrian and American film director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Rzeszow, then part of Austria-Hungary and now in Poland, he was educated in France and Germany and began his career in Europe before emigrating to the United States, where he specialized in shorts before making 25 feature films over a career of about fifty years. His best-known films include The Search (1948), The Men (1950), High Noon (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), Oklahoma! (1955) and The Nun's Story (1959), and he later directed A Man for All Seasons and Julia. He won Academy Awards for directing and producing and died in London in 1997.
