Sir David Lean, born in Croydon, Surrey, on 25 March 1908, was an English filmmaker and editor, widely considered one of the most important figures of British cinema. He died on 16 April 1991. He directed the large-scale epics The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter and A Passage to India, as well as the Dickens adaptations Great Expectations and Oliver Twist and the romantic drama Brief Encounter.
