Sam Mendes

Sam Mendes is a British filmmaker and stage director born in Reading, England, in 1965, who was appointed CBE in 2000 and knighted in 2020. He made his film directing debut with American Beauty in 1999, which won him the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Directors Guild of America Award for Best Director, making him the sixth director to win the Academy Award for a debut feature. He went on to direct Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, two James Bond films, Skyfall and Spectre, and the 2019 First World War epic 1917, which won him the BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Director. Before his film career he was a transformative theatre director at the Donmar Warehouse from 1990 to 2002, winning five Laurence Olivier Awards and two Tony Awards for Best Direction of a Play.
