DreamWorks Pictures was founded on 12 October 1994 as a live action and animation film studio by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, whose initials formed the studio original name, DreamWorks SKG, following Katzenberg resignation from the Walt Disney Company that year. Each of the three founders contributed 33 million dollars, with an additional 500 million dollar investment from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The founders sold the studio to Viacom, the parent of Paramount Pictures, in a sale completed in February 2006.
