American Beauty

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

American Beauty is a 1999 film directed by Sam Mendes in his feature debut, written by Alan Ball, following Lester Burnham, played by Kevin Spacey, a suburban father in a stagnant marriage and unfulfilling career who narrates his own final year of life after an infatuation with his teenage daughter's friend prompts him to abandon convention and pursue a fantasy of renewed youth. Its critique of suburban conformity and repressed desire, filmed with a heightened visual style built around recurring imagery of rose petals, resonated widely on release. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor at the 72nd Academy Awards.
