The Best Intentions

The Best Intentions, released in Swedish as Den goda viljan, is a 1992 drama directed by Bille August from a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman, a Swedish production. Semi-autobiographical, it dramatizes the courtship and early marriage of Bergman's own parents, following Henrik, a poor Lutheran minister, and Anna, a woman from the wealthy Akerblom family, as they marry despite class conflict and Henrik's earlier entanglement with another woman, and settle in a remote northern Swedish parish where he becomes embroiled in local controversy; the story ends as Anna becomes pregnant with the child who will grow up to be Ingmar Bergman. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, and Pernilla August won the festival's Best Actress award for playing Anna. It was an unusually expensive production for Scandinavian cinema of its time, and critics praised its emotional power.
