Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory, released in France as La Sortie de l'usine Lumiere a Lyon, is an 1895 short film directed by Louis Lumiere, consisting of a single fixed-camera shot of workers exiting the Lumiere family's photographic factory in Lyon. It was among the very first films shown by the Lumiere brothers to a paying public audience, at a screening in Paris in December 1895 widely regarded as one of the foundational public demonstrations of cinema. Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory is widely regarded as one of the earliest surviving motion pictures and a founding work of the actuality film, a genre presenting unstaged everyday scenes.
