Wild at Heart (1990 film)

Wild at Heart is a 1990 American Southern Gothic black comedy crime film written and directed by David Lynch, adapted from Barry Gifford's 1989 novel of the same name. It follows lovers Sailor Ripley and Lula Fortune, played by Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, as they flee across the southern United States pursued by Lula's domineering mother and the criminals she hires, in a story laced with allusions to The Wizard of Oz and Elvis Presley imagery. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival amid controversy over its graphic content, and Diane Ladd received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. It was a box-office disappointment on release and drew polarized reviews, but has since been positively reevaluated and ranked among the notable films of the 1990s.
