Wheel of Fortune is an American television game show created by Merv Griffin that premiered on January 6, 1975, in which contestants solve word puzzles in the style of hangman while spinning a large carnival style wheel to determine the dollar value of each correctly guessed letter, with the top scorer advancing to a bonus round for additional cash and prizes. Vanna White has served as the show's co-host and letter turner for most of its run. Having aired roughly eight thousand episodes, it is the longest running syndicated game show in the United States, has been adapted into more than sixty international versions, and had awarded contestants over two hundred million dollars in cash and prizes as of 2012.
