The Silent World is a 1956 French documentary directed by the oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and, in an early credit, Louis Malle, filmed aboard Cousteau's research vessel Calypso and shot largely underwater using diving and camera equipment Cousteau had helped develop. It was among the first films to bring extensive color underwater cinematography to a general audience, documenting marine life, coral reefs and shipwrecks with a directness moviegoers had rarely seen. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and it is credited with helping popularize scuba diving and ocean conservation as subjects for a mass audience.
