The Office is a British sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant that aired on the BBC beginning in 2001, presented in a single-camera mockumentary style depicting the mundane daily life of employees at a fictional paper company's branch in Slough, managed by the self-important David Brent, played by Gervais. Its deadpan, cringe-driven comedy and its fake-documentary presentation, largely novel for a scripted sitcom at the time, are widely credited with popularizing the mockumentary format that numerous later sitcoms subsequently adopted, and the series was itself adapted into a number of international versions.
