The Ed Sullivan Show

Television Programming Landmarks

The Ed Sullivan Show is an American television variety program hosted by entertainment columnist Ed Sullivan that ran on CBS from 1948 to 1971, presenting a weekly mixture of musical performances, comedy acts, and other entertainment drawn from vaudeville, Broadway, and popular music. The program became especially notable for introducing major musical acts to a mass American television audience, including Elvis Presley's heavily watched 1956 appearances and the Beatles' American television debut in 1964, both widely cited as turning points in the careers of those performers. Running for 23 years, The Ed Sullivan Show became one of the longest-running variety programs in American television history and a central venue through which new popular music reached national audiences.
