Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama directed by John G. Avildsen and written by and starring Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, an unremarkable Philadelphia club boxer given an improbable shot at the world heavyweight title against champion Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers. Made on a modest budget with Stallone insisting on starring in a script he had written specifically to launch his own acting career, it became a major box office success, won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, and launched a long running film franchise.
